Legal Issues in Digital Humanities: Introduction and Where Things Stand (UCL)

Legal issues affect all digital humanities data that are protected by copyright, personal data protection, or licenses. For researchers who wish to understand the fundamentals of legal issues and DH, this talk will introduce the key concepts: copyright, orphan works, database protection, licensing best practices, and personal data protection. For those with experience in legal issues, this talk will also discuss the rapidly changing laws that affect digital humanities in the UK, EU, and globally, including the text and data mining exception in the UK (and its reception), the EU General Data Protection Regulation, and the European Commission’s Proposal for the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market
